Pets are sensitive to change. A move disrupts their familiar territory. With preparation and patience, you ease the transition for dog, cat and co.
Before the move
Keep the usual routines as much as possible. Keep the bed, toys and bowls until the last moment. For long journeys, get your pet used to its carrier a few weeks in advance.
On moving day
On the day, it's best to leave the pet with a trusted person or set it up in a quiet, closed room. The coming and going, open doors and noise can frighten the animal and make it flee.
Tips by species
Dogs adjust faster if you keep their usual walks. Cats need time and safe retreats. Small animals and birds should be transported in their usual cage, protected from draughts.
After the move
First set up a familiar corner for the pet, with its bed and toys. Give it time and attention. Most animals get used to the new environment within a few days to weeks.
