The timing of your move affects not only the price but also the availability of moving companies. In Switzerland, many moves concentrate on certain dates – those who are flexible save money and nerves. Here you'll find everything about notice periods, customary dates and the best time to move.
Notice periods for rented apartments
For rented apartments, a legal notice period of at least three months to a customary date applies in Switzerland. Many leases additionally provide fixed termination dates – often end of March, end of June and end of September. In some cantons and municipalities, different customary dates apply. Check your lease carefully and count the three-month period backwards. Important: the termination must reach the landlord provably (registered) and on time.
Customary moving dates
End of March
One of the most common termination and moving dates. Book early.
End of June
Popular summer date, often families and students. High demand.
End of September
Classic autumn date. Also very much in demand, especially in cities.
End of month in general
Many leases end at month-end – these days are in demand accordingly.
When is the best (and cheapest) time to move?
The peak season for moves in Switzerland is between March and September – moving companies are then busiest and prices higher. Those who are flexible benefit: moves on weekdays, outside month-ends and in winter (November to February) are often significantly cheaper. Availability is also better then. Our tip: book your move as early as possible.
